Ok, so I never had or used steam before. Once I heard about ssl moving to steam, I went and made an account and downloaded it. It has never worked for me though. I have been getting the same error for months now. I've googled and tried every method I have found and nothing has helped. I've tried to edit the registery, I've disabled my anti-virus, I've tried to delete the files that the steam forums told me to, and I've been contacting steam support for about a week now of them telling me to delete files that are not there to delete. I keep repeating myself to them I do not have the files they keep telling me to delete but they keep telling me to delete them anyways. I'm at a loss with it, idk what else to do or try. Any help or idea's from anyone?

Here is a gif of my problem also
    [IMG]

Steam support tells me I need to do this:

    Exit Steam.

Please browse to your Steam folder.

By default, this folder can be found at "C:\Program Files\Steam\" and is accessible through My Computer.

    Click *once* on Steam.exe.

With Steam.exe highlighted, hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard.

With CTRL held down, click once on the Steamapps folder.

Now, if both items are selected, you can let go of CTRL.

Now, click the 'Edit' menu at the top of the window and choose "Invert Selection".

This will select everything *except* the two items previously selected.

Now, click the File menu and choose "Delete".

This will delete all files *except* Steam.exe and Steamapps. Please verify that these are the *only* items in this folder.

It may ask you if you are sure you wish to delete this files. Please answer "Yes" or "Yes to all" if you receive such a message.

If you receive any errors or messages during this process, please specific about what those are.

Now, double click on Steam.exe from within the Steam folder.

This should launch Steam and re-create the deleted files.

    Now, re-test the original issue.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I go to the Steam files where they tell me to and this is what I have. I do not have a steam.exe or a steamapps folder to highlight like they keep telling me to. I have tried to delete the bin, logs, package, and public files and opened it from the steam file above uninstall but it's the same problem. I've deleted steam several times and re-downloaded it as well.

Also, my computer is a 2011 HP compaq with windows 7 professional and a 64 bit OS, 4 gb of ram, and a intel Celeron CPU 220GHz.

So, any thoughts or ideas on this?

Link to list of programs which may interfere: Here

You probably have looked at this ^ but try checking out your antivirus programs. Just simply deactivate the for a short time and see what happens. Windows firewall or avast! sometime affects internet issues, so perhaps that is what is causing the issue.

Also, try checking in Program Files, which is the (32 bit) version. See if anything was put in there. I see you have open Program Files (x86) which is the (64 bit) version. Just check and see and let me know if any of this works... glad to help more if it doesn't =)

I have AVG anti-virus, I disabled the firewall on it and tried that but nothing. I have my windows firewall disabled completely also. I tried to completely disable everything on AVG and still no good. I had problems on an old computer that wouldn't play any sort of youtube or any other video because of a cheap anti-virus that had been put on it lol.

I checked in the program files with out the x86 and there wasn't anything with steam in those.

Okay, let's try another route... let's go to your Taskbar icons (bottom right corner of your screen by your clock and date), and open the "Show hidden icons" triangle to see if Steam is running there. Right click it and click on Exit if the Steam logo is there.

    1) Click on Start menu button
    2) Type this into the Search button and click enter --> regedit
    3) Go to --> HKEY_CURRENT_USER --> Software --> Valve
    4) Click on the Steam folder
    5) Find "Offline", and right click and then click on "Modify Binary Data".
    6) Change it to 0 if it is at 1

Then restart Steam- or start it up after you click OK and close all of that.

Let me know if it works or not..

This is one of the other methods I had tried too. It's acting like it's missing files, things everyone else seems to have with their Steam files I don't. I really don't get it. This is all I got in the steam folder for the registry editor.

    Hmm, very strange...

Can you go to your Program List (Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Programs --> Programs and Features) and type in the Search box for Steam? If it's not there, then you have some issues I'd have to research more.. if it is there, can you click "Repair" after you select "Steam"? Like this:

It's like I'm always missing 1 thing I need with steam. I have no idea why, but repair isn't there. I tried to right click on steam also and it just gave me a 2nd option to uninstall.

Wow... okay... um, let me check on other things to do. I've never seen that before with Steam. Usually cheap aftermarket crap programs would do that, but not Steam lol

I'll let you know if I find anything. Only thing I can guess for now is that Steam is truly not installed on your computer although it says it is. I would suggest uninstalling, restarting, and reinstalling making sure that you read all buttons about where it makes a folder and stuff like that. Probably already did that, but I maybe a restart would get the Steam error out of the system and allow it to reinstall properly.

Ok, so I tried that now too. I deleted every shred of steam and valve files and registry and rebooted then re-downloaded. Still, same problem. Steam support replied to me also and told me to do the same as thing as you did in the last one too. I did it again and still the same problem. This is so frustrating trying to get steam to work and nothing seems to help. I did want to test to see if it was just the wireless router or modem causing problems and plugged my laptop directly into the modem but still the same problem. Then I had an idea to try it on my gf's ancient desk top and steam worked perfectly on it. Which is just more disappointing to me. I can't use it for anything, it's so slow and laggy it would never play properly so I'm not even going to try that lol. Anyways, this is starting to seem hopeless for steam to work on my computer.

    Okay.. we'll keep trying ^.^

We'll try 2 ways and see what happens. I'm guessing you still have Steam installed on your computer but just not opening, so let's click [Ctrl + Alt + Delete] and open up Task Manager. Check to see if Steam.exe is running there. If it is, then end that process- don't worry about the warnings, it won't damage it. Then try opening it again.

If the big bad Steam eating monster in your computer is still alive, let's use a bigger hammer >=)

    Second option:

First, I want you to go to your download folder and delete the "SteamSetup" installation application that you installed. Make sure there are no other ones also- probably already have checked, but just in case, search for "SteamSetup".. never can check things like that too much x)

Now I want you to go here and click on the Install Steam Now button. When it's finished, I want you to check in your download folder and make sure it looks like this
    Mr Anon1.png

Okay, assuming that it's 1,116 KB on yours too, let's go ahead and install it again, but we'll save it somewhere else to see if it installs it differently. (We can always move it afterwards if absolutely necessary)

Click on "SteamSetup", accept the security warning, click Next on the Setup, accept License of Agreement, select English (unless you want Chinese :p) and click next. Now, let's see what happens if you click on Browse, and go up to Program Files- the normal one, not the (x86) one. Make sure the "Program Files" folder is opened with all the other folders in it. Select Program Files so it's blue, and click on "Make New Folder". Name it "Steam", and click to install there.

Another possibility, although somewhat difficult to do since you don't have any files in your Steam folder... but if there is one named SteamTmp, you can try clicking on that and seeing if it will work and if it successfully updates and does it's business, maybe the normal shortcut will work too..

I checked in the task manager to make sure no steam anything was running and all was good there.

I went through the downloads and deleted the steam stuff and deleted all steam again from everywhere else too. I re-downloaded it and made the Steam file on program files and made the steam folder and saved the new download to it too. Is weird though, it saved SteamSetup to the program files, but all the other steam stuff that has been saving in the program files (x86) went back to save there instead of the steam file I made in the normal program files. So it kind of split it into 2 places? Still the same issue when I try to open it from either too though. At this point I'm wondering if I download it in Chinese maybe it would work better lmao.

    Program files
    [IMG]

    program files (x86)

EDIT: I just remembered a problem I had a while back. I had downloaded something (can't remember what it was?) but it messed up several settings on my computer. It set everything on my computer to run through a proxy and nothing would connect. I had to change both my browsers off the proxy and a few other things that had got messed up. This was all several months before I ever downloaded steam though. Not sure if that could have something to do with this?

EDIT #2: Ok I just ran the install again and saved it on the normal program files again and it came out like this now.

EDIT #3: One other thing I've noticed is it pops up a crash folder when I try to open steam, then it goes away a few seconds later.

I haven't been reading everything, so this might be a stupid comment. But have you tried running Steam as administrator?

I did see that one but I'm a bit wary of finding things from youtube to download so I haven't tried that one yet. I tried all the forums things I had found and some of the easier youtube ones. I'll try this one right now though. There isn't anything else left to try that I know of. Thanks too Deception, I appreciate it too.

Edit: Ok, I did everything from the video and it did get me 1 step more close to fixing it which is awesome! It let me log in at least, but now it's stuck on this error. It's another error similar to the one I was having before. Another connection problem.

Update: I've retried all of the above suggestions to fix the new problem and I still have the new problem. Now I have the steam.exe file but not the steamapps file so I deleted everything except the steam.exe file and the steam file that opens the application. When I did that, it was able to update with out crashing first and got completely new files from steam and had all the updates, but it ran back into this same new problem of not being able to connect after the log in screen. Steam has managed to give me a massive headache for tonight so I'm going to get some sleep and try again tomorrow. Thanks for everyone's help too, I really do appreciate it and I am thankful to have such of an awesome community of people here too!

Thanks BT and Anon, this greatly taught me a lot about this problem and anyone else maybe experiencing problwms regarding Steam.

Mr. Anonymous!! I thought of something...

So, your installer isn't installing all the files obviously, which is leading to the error about your internet. I highly doubt it's anything to do with your internet source, so the biggest possibility right now would be to try a different version! - the 1.0 version that I have!

Click Here for the 1.0 version. (Click the green Download button- I checked for viruses and there are none- and it will take you to a page that shows download the new version or 1.0. Click on 1.0 version.) Then, if it actually works, then you're going to have Steam update to the newer version, which is the one you've been downloading- v2.10.91.91

oh plz plz plz, I hope this one works O.O

I tried downloading it just now and went back to the first error I was having, going to delete every steam file and try again really quick and maybe it will work better, I really really hope so too! Thanks again too BT!

Edit: Was definitely worth a try but it's back to the first problem again. I'm going to try that video stuff combined with this and see what happens. The 1.0 version still only gave me the files that the new one did too. At this point I'm willing to try almost anything (except buying a new copy of windows for my laptop) lol.

Edit #2: Ok with the video stuff combined with version 1.0 I'm back at the 2nd error I was getting. Now I'll try to delete all the files except Steam.exe and the steam apps one that opens it and I should be able to get all the correct updates hopefully too!

Ok, So I did delete everything except steam.exe and the steam apps that opens steam from the folders and I did get it to update too. All of that led me back to error #1 then I pasted all of the files from that youtube video in the steam folder with all the new updated files to try them all together and I'm back at error #2 again (the one in the last gif I had posted up there ^)

Ok I haven't read everything on this post but I saw something about you messing up your computer and having to connect through proxy.

So, maybe problem isnt due to steam itself but you having network issues? My recommendation is that try running your windows on the setting "safe mode with networking" and try running/installing steam there.

I was really hoping that workaround to work and we could solve the underlying issue from there. Can you check if your hosts file in your "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" directory is modified and have any entries related to steam listed there?

Hello, i am not a tech genius but i have done a bit of searching (3 mins) and found this. You say you have disabled your firewalls/anti-virus. But this also list's some other different things that may cause interference one of those i noticed that you had being utorrent. Please take a look at the link i will provide and anything listed in the link i provide disable/temp delete and try it. It's worth a shot at least.
